Veteran forward Sarah Nurse has been replaced by college forward Alexia Aubin on the Canadian women’s hockey team selection camp roster for the upcoming world championship. Hockey Canada revealed the switch on the first day of the camp in Quebec City without providing a specific reason for the change.
A spokesperson from Hockey Canada later disclosed that Nurse had declined the invitation to the camp, and the organization would honor her decision. Despite being initially invited, Nurse will still be involved in the team’s process throughout the camp, according to the spokesperson.
The Canadian world championship squad will be finalized from a group of 42 players attending the seven-day camp. Nurse, a three-time Olympian, notably set tournament records for points and assists during the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, where Canada secured a gold medal. She has also contributed to Canada’s victories in the 2021, 2022, and 2024 world championships.
Following Nurse’s withdrawal, Alexia Aubin, a junior at Colgate University from Levis, Que., has stepped into the roster. Aubin, aged 20, previously competed for Canada’s development team in a summer series against the United States.
The women’s world championship, scheduled for November 6-16, will take place in Esbjerg and Herning, Denmark. The United States currently holds the championship title.
