“ASU Launches Review After NHL Prospect’s Workout Collapse”

Published:

Arizona State University has initiated an independent review following the collapse of NHL prospect Matthew Mayich during a workout in August. The review aims to improve outdoor athlete training safety and response to adverse events. Mayich’s family lawyer expressed concerns that the review may not address accountability for the incident.

In a report released in September, Arizona State University official James Rund disclosed that Mayich collapsed at Sun Angel Stadium during a training session without a reviewed plan from the hockey coaches. The family of the 21-year-old player, who remains hospitalized, emphasized his fighting spirit and the need for a miracle.

The family and teammates of Mayich have raised questions regarding the circumstances of the workout and the response to his collapse. Allegations include the lack of water provision during the intense session held in extreme heat. Following a letter from teammates, ASU placed hockey coach Greg Powers on paid administrative leave.

An independent review led by former Arizona Chief Justice Scott Bales will focus on planning outdoor athletic activities, staffing, response protocols for adverse events, and utilizing external consultants. Student athletes will have the opportunity to participate anonymously in the review, expected to conclude by early December.

The family’s attorney emphasized the need for an investigation into the incident’s causes and responsible parties, urging ASU to broaden the review’s scope. ASU’s decision to appoint an interim coach and the call for transparency in the investigation have garnered attention from legislative figures.

Matthew Mayich, a former player for the Hamilton Huskies and Ottawa 67’s before being drafted by the St. Louis Blues, is currently under critical care after the workout incident.
