The Toronto Blue Jays will honor longtime broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence this Saturday at Rogers Centre. Martinez, who recently retired after an illustrious career of more than 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the organization in various roles including player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude, Martinez acknowledged the fans for their unwavering support throughout the years, making him feel like a part of their families. Renowned for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez credited his return to Toronto in 2010 as the catalyst for these phrases, drawing inspiration from his time in Milwaukee.
Reflecting on his transition into retirement, Martinez highlighted the significant change after being actively involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health concerns, including a second battle with cancer in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022), necessitated his departure from broadcasting duties. However, Martinez happily shared that he is now cancer-free and in good health.
The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who contributed to shaping the franchise, including the 11 current members on the team’s Level of Excellence such as Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.
Martinez reminisced about his early days with the Blue Jays, admitting he initially felt “exiled” when joining the team in 1981. However, he soon realized the city’s passion for baseball and the team’s widespread support, describing Toronto as a special destination for players and fans alike.
Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, Martinez praised the exceptional performance and chemistry of the teams, particularly highlighting the memorable Game 7. He also commented on the challenges faced by players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., emphasizing the relentless nature of the game even for top talents.
As Martinez continues to cherish his memories with the Blue Jays, his legacy remains a vital part of the team’s history and the broader baseball community.
