England’s Bukayo Saka surprised students by making an unexpected visit to his former primary school to emphasize the importance of positive role models for young individuals. Saka’s appearance at Edward Betham School left the children in awe as he engaged with them while they showcased projects on role models, with the Arsenal star being their top choice.
During the visit, Saka met with his former headteacher, Caroline Chamberlain, and PE coach, Leigh Curtin, both of whom had a significant impact on his early development. He shared with the pupils the influence of his teachers, mentors, and coaches on his journey both on and off the field. The children had the opportunity to ask him questions in a lively Q&A session where he discussed his own role models and the essential skills like perseverance and teamwork that have been crucial in his success.
Reflecting on the visit, Saka expressed gratitude for the chance to hear students talk about their role models and how he may have inspired them. He highlighted the importance of having supportive figures to explore interests and credited his teachers and coaches for believing in him and shaping his character.
Caroline Chamberlain, the Headteacher at Edward Betham Primary School, commended Saka for his hard work, kindness, and determination as a former pupil, showcasing to current students the achievements he has attained. She emphasized the school’s focus on fostering qualities like perseverance and teamwork, stating that Saka now serves as an exemplary role model illustrating the impact of these skills on one’s journey.
Saka’s visit coincided with new research by YouGov, commissioned by Chase, underscoring the significant influence of sporting role models on young people. The findings revealed that a large majority of children who admire someone in sports look up to famous players or athletes, with many drawing inspiration from coaches or PE teachers. The research also highlighted the role of sports in imparting crucial life skills such as resilience and teamwork.
The Chase football coaching program, designed to create more inspiring role models for children across the UK, offers fully funded access to coaching qualifications and professional coaching bursaries for individuals from underprivileged backgrounds. Saka praised the program for providing opportunities for aspiring coaches to become role models and inspire young individuals.
In a separate development, Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to include popular streaming services like HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, and more, along with comprehensive coverage of Premier League and EFL matches. Sky’s coverage includes over 1,400 live matches across multiple sports, including Formula 1, darts, and golf.
Deborah Keay, Chief Marketing Officer at Chase, emphasized the program’s goal to create a lasting impact in UK communities by supporting individuals in their coaching journey. She highlighted the importance of nurturing role models who can pass on valuable skills to help young people succeed both on and off the field.
