Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh narrowly missed out on the gold medal by 0.02 seconds in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. The Toronto native, a reigning Olympic and world champion, settled for silver as China’s Yu Yiting clinched gold and set a championship record with a time of 2:07.45. American swimmer Alex Walsh secured the bronze with a time of 2:07.66.
McIntosh’s performance marked her third individual medal at the championships, having previously won gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. Additionally, she contributed to Canada’s bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event.
Reflecting on her results, McIntosh expressed that while it was one of her better swims during the meet, she plans to focus on improvement for the upcoming season. The young swimmer, who holds the world record in the event with a time of 2:05.70, acknowledged her achievements at a young age and looks forward to further growth as she enters her twenties.
In a separate event, Taylor Ruck from Kelowna, B.C., set a new Canadian record in the women’s 50m freestyle with a time of 24.23 seconds, finishing fourth in a highly competitive final. The race saw American Kate Douglass break the world record twice in the same day, ultimately setting a new record of 23.19.
Douglass had previously set the world record with a time of 23.49 in the morning preliminaries, surpassing her teammate Gretchen Walsh, who held the record at 23.55 since June. This marked Douglass’s third time lowering the world record in the sprint race. The accomplished swimmer, a five-time Olympic medalist, secured silver in the 50 free at the 2024 world championships.
The Pan Pacific Championships featured swimmers from various countries, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Japan, and China. The event witnessed outstanding performances and individual world records being set, showcasing the competitive spirit and talent of the participants.
