A woman from Prince George, British Columbia, has a belief that she could be the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s famous song “Jolene.” Juline Whelan recalls meeting the singer in 1972 and shares similarities with the description of the little girl who supposedly influenced the song’s title.
In a 2008 interview with Norwegian television program Lydverket, Dolly Parton mentioned that she encountered a young girl with red hair, green eyes, and fair skin named Jolene, whom she vowed to write a song about after their brief interaction.
Whelan, who was 10 years old at the time, attended one of Parton’s concerts in Disneyland with her family and approached the singer for an autograph, particularly drawn to Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors.” She only realized the potential connection to the song “Jolene” years later while watching a TV movie about Parton’s life.
Upon researching further, Whelan discovered the interview where Parton described meeting a girl resembling herself. The frequent mix-up of her name, often being called Jolene instead of Juline, adds to the intrigue of the story for Whelan.
Despite the mature themes in the song “Jolene” – depicting a plea for fidelity – Whelan has come to appreciate its artistry over the years, even though the association with the song was initially bothersome to her. As Dolly Parton’s iconic hit, “Jolene” holds a significant place in music history, being recognized as one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
Whelan looks forward to the opportunity to meet Dolly Parton once again during an upcoming performance in Vancouver, admitting she would likely be at a loss for words in such a momentous encounter.
