“Deadly 7.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Indonesia, Dozens Killed”

Published:

At least 47 individuals lost their lives following a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake and numerous aftershocks that hit eastern Indonesia on Saturday, as stated by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). About 2,000 people sought refuge in safer locations amidst the chaos.

Rescue teams have not yet managed to access Nagekeo, the area nearest to the quake’s epicenter, due to road blockages caused by landslides and communication disruptions. The tsunami warning was canceled approximately three hours post-quake.

Residents in Talibura, East Nusa Tenggara, like 51-year-old Nona, described the intense shock of the earthquake, prompting them to flee for safety. In Maumere, a port town, initial rescue efforts uncovered 20 fatalities, six injuries, and two individuals trapped under debris.

According to BNPB head Suharyanto, some residents remain trapped in buildings in the affected regions, with landslides impeding transportation access. Reports indicate numerous homes, warehouses, and government structures suffered damage, with traffic congestion and power outages adding to the challenges.

Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena confirmed at least five deaths caused by collapsing structures while people slept. Preliminary data from BNPB disclosed extensive damages to residences, schools, health facilities, places of worship, and infrastructure in the affected areas.

Videos shared on social media depicted chaotic scenes of buildings collapsing in Maumere as terrified residents fled the disaster. The earthquake’s impact was felt across various regions, prompting widespread evacuations and heightened concerns about potential aftershocks.

Indonesia, situated along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic activities due to the convergence of tectonic plates, leading to a high occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
