German authorities are probing a drone loaded with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s plan to intensify retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine. Lavrov, in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, stated, “We will employ more severe measures to dismantle everything supporting the West in arming Kyiv’s military machine. We are already taking action.”
According to German investigators, an airport staff member found a drone carrying an unidentified explosive device in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, designated as “critical infrastructure.” Leipzig serves as a crucial NATO airport used for transporting weapons, ammunition, and military gear to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The incident of the drone, discovered next to one of the Ukrainian cargo planes, signifies “a heightened level of threat” for Germany, as per the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. Dobrindt noted that the incident does not appear amateurish, and investigators are treating it as part of a “professional hybrid threat scenario.”
German authorities are investigating the situation and have not disclosed the drone’s origin. Recent U.S. intelligence reports suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government. Berlin is responding cautiously by bolstering anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions.
In response to the evolving threat landscape, Dobrindt highlighted that Russia is employing drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, especially ahead of upcoming regional elections in Germany. He emphasized the daily challenges posed by these new forms of hybrid warfare.
Furthermore, Dobrindt revealed that Germany has been a constant target of hybrid warfare, including espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert actions by foreign entities aiming to destabilize the country and instigate political and social changes. Recent instances, such as the foiled plot to assassinate a German defense contractor CEO, highlight the persistent threats faced by Germany.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s interference in Germany through digital campaigns like Operation Overload, which aims to exploit conflicts within NATO member countries and Ukraine. The ISD noted the dissemination of disinformation to undermine Ukraine’s war efforts and democratic processes in Germany, France, and Ukraine.
As Germany navigates these complex challenges, the country remains vigilant against foreign interference, including disinformation campaigns and physical threats. The escalating tactics by Russia in hybrid warfare pose critical questions about the threshold between defense and direct confrontation, underscoring the need for clear boundaries in international relations.
