Multiple injuries were reported following explosions at a school in Indonesia during Friday prayers. The incident occurred in the Kelapa Gading neighborhood of Jakarta. At least three individuals are in critical condition, with a 17-year-old student suspected to be the perpetrator. Approximately 17 other students are receiving medical treatment after the blasts.
Authorities, including the Indonesian Police bomb squad, are investigating the mosque at the school where the explosions took place. Witnesses mentioned hearing two loud blasts around midday, coinciding with the start of the sermon at the mosque.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police is actively probing the background of the suspect and the potential motives behind the incident that shook Kelapa Gading. Some victims have been treated and discharged, according to local media.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the 17-year-old suspect is undergoing surgery, without providing further details. National Police Chief Listyo Sigit confirmed that the suspect, one of two students undergoing surgery for severe injuries, has been identified.
Sigit revealed that investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s motives, including how he acquired and assembled a toy submachine gun with specific inscriptions. Most victims suffered injuries from glass fragments and burns, with the explosions originating near the mosque’s loudspeaker. Authorities swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals, where 20 students are receiving treatment, including three with severe burns.
