A new addition is anticipated to join the ranks of Michael Schumacher and all current Formula 1 champions on a special sports item that will raise significant funds for a charity. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Schumacher, with the support of his wife Corinna, signed a racing helmet previously worn by fellow F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart.
Schumacher has maintained a low profile for more than ten years after a skiing accident in December 2013 resulted in life-altering injuries. Details about his health have been kept private by Corinna amidst intense media interest in the seven-time F1 champion.
However, a glimpse into Schumacher’s world was shared by Sir Jackie, who is raising funds for his charity Race for Dementia. He mentioned that Schumacher’s wife assisted him in adding his initials, ‘MS’, to the helmet by guiding his hand as he signed it.
The helmet now bears 20 signatures from living F1 champions, with a 21st name expected to be added in December, pending the outcome of the remaining races in the season. Max Verstappen, currently trailing by 36 points, may be the next addition to the helmet.
Verstappen’s signature, as a four-time F1 champion, is already on the helmet and will stay unless he stages a remarkable comeback. Otherwise, either Lando Norris or his teammate Oscar Piastri will complete the list.
The original helmet is on display at the F1 Exhibition, with a replica version up for grabs in a raffle open to all F1 fans. By donating £10 or more, fans can enter for a chance to win the replica helmet and a fully paid trip to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Sir Jackie will present the prize personally. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit his charity, established in honor of his wife’s battle with dementia.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed pride in supporting the fight against dementia alongside Race Against Dementia, acknowledging Sir Jackie’s dedication to the cause. Fans have until November 22 to enter the raffle at the provided link.
