A court has revealed that a woman was fatally shot on a residential estate in Wales due to mistaken identity during a conflict between rival drug factions. Joanne Penney, aged 40, was present at a friend’s apartment when an assailant fired shots at the entrance. It is believed that the actual target was Joanne’s friend, Katie Summers, who answered the door to the shooter.
The tragic incident occurred on March 9 this year at a residence in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Emergency services responded to the scene shortly before 6 pm, finding Joanne critically injured. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at the location. None of her four children were present during the attack.
Facing trial for her murder are Marcus Huntley, Kristina Ginova, Joshua Gordon, Melissa Quailey-Dashper, Tony Porter, and Jordan Mills-Smith. The prosecution alleges that the motive behind the shooting was a clash between rival drug organizations in the region. The court was informed that the crime was part of a dispute between two criminal groups.
The prosecution stated that one of the gangs, led by Joshua Gordon, known as Rico or Reece, had expanded its operations into South Wales, particularly in Talbot Green. This expansion was met with opposition from a rival group led by Daniel ‘Jimmy’ Joseph, operating in the same area.
On the night of the incident, Porter transported Gordon, Quailey-Dashper, Huntley, and Mills-Smith to the scene. While Gordon and Porter stayed in the vehicle, the others approached the flat where the shooting occurred. The prosecution alleges that Huntley was the one who pulled the trigger, but all defendants are accused of having a role in Joanne Penney’s murder.
The court was informed that the intended target was likely Joanne’s friend, who shared similar physical characteristics. The trial is ongoing.
