In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series based on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the show during the 1990s.

When Czajka learned about Ruffman’s appearance at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend. “She was like my own Disney princess when I was little,” Czajka shared during the convention, expressing her excitement at being in P.E.I.

Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out “Road to Avonlea” convention. The acclaimed Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

The show followed the journey of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series garnered a dedicated following.

The three-day convention featured oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and tours to filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the event organizer, noted that the enduring appeal of the show lies in offering viewers an escape into a world of values like kindness and friendship. He expressed hope for the continued reach of the show to new audiences.

Ruffman shared the emotional connection she felt with fans during the convention, highlighting the lasting impact of portraying Aunt Olivia. Czajka, now reliving the series with her own children, emphasized the rarity of finding a show that resonates across generations and fosters shared viewing experiences.

The convention was a testament to the lasting influence of “Road to Avonlea,” with attendees cherishing the opportunity to celebrate the beloved series and its enduring themes of family, friendship, and nostalgia.
