“Fatal Gun Battle Erupts in Greek Island Feud”

Published:

Two individuals have lost their lives, and a minimum of six others sustained injuries during an incident involving gunfire on the Greek island of Crete over the weekend. The event transpired shortly after 11 am and was ignited by an enduring family feud in the village of Vorizia, situated 32 miles to the south of the island’s major city, Heraklion, as per authorities.

Police have confirmed that a 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman were the two casualties who succumbed during the exchange of gunfire. Emergency services EKAB stated that six additional individuals were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities with injuries of varying degrees. Currently, two injured men are hospitalized and are under surveillance as authorities investigate their involvement in the armed altercation.

The gun battle prompted a significant response from security personnel and emergency teams to the small mountain village, where a preliminary investigation has been initiated by authorities. Reports suggest that the incident is the latest episode in a bitter conflict between two local families and follows an explosion that occurred on Friday night at a construction site. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from that blast.

It has been disclosed by Greek public broadcaster ERT that the two families had previously clashed over grazing territories, which were eventually resolved through private mediation, a common practice in rural regions of Crete. The dispute reignited last year when a member of one family purchased land to construct a residence in an area predominantly controlled by the other family, per local sources.

The residence that was the scene of the explosion on Friday was allegedly constructed on this disputed land.
