“Highgate Italian Restaurant Closes Amid Community Indifference”

Published:

Locals in Highgate, North London, have responded to the closure of Don Ciccio, an Italian restaurant that shut its doors after six years. Marco Claudio Valente, the owner, expressed frustration at the lack of support from residents, citing empty dining rooms and meager daily earnings as reasons for the closure.

In a final statement, Mr. Valente criticized the community for their indifference, claiming that despite positive ratings and accolades, the restaurant struggled to attract patrons. While acknowledging the dedication of his staff, he lamented the lack of patronage from the neighborhood, especially after the restaurant remained open during lockdown.

Despite Mr. Valente’s accusations, some locals like Chris Underhill from Prickett & Ellis estate agents defended the community, stating that residents are discerning about where they dine, with many other quality dining options available in the area. He highlighted the competitive food scene in Highgate, noting that successful businesses are those that offer value and quality.

While Don Ciccio plans to close permanently, Mr. Valente remains determined to open a new restaurant in London, emphasizing the importance of community support over the wealth of patrons. Mario Seyho from local newsagent Brooksby acknowledged Mr. Valente’s disappointment but also noted the challenges that restaurants in the area face.

The closure of Don Ciccio adds to a series of restaurant exits in the region, with the owner’s future endeavors aiming to learn from this experience and cater to a broader clientele base.
