“ICE Shooting of Dominican Man in NYC Sparks Outrage”

Published:

U.S. federal immigration authorities shot and injured a Dominican man during an arrest in New York City on Thursday as part of a targeted enforcement operation, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident has sparked concerns among protesters regarding the immigration policies under the Trump administration.

The man, identified as a “criminal illegal alien” with a prior grand larceny conviction and a record of other arrests, is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, as confirmed by DHS. While the exact circumstances leading to the shooting were not detailed, DHS stated that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer discharged his weapon, resulting in the man’s injury.

The man had been previously arrested in December 2023 but was subsequently released, with DHS attributing this to what they described as “reckless” policies in cities led by Democrats like New York. In response to the incident, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for an end to all ICE raids in the city, with demonstrators chanting slogans demanding ICE to leave the streets.

The shooting took place in the Marble Hill neighborhood, which is a small area connected to the Bronx in Manhattan. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing gunshots and seeing the man on the ground surrounded by officers wearing DHS-branded face masks and vests.

Concerns were raised by residents like Pedro Almaraz and Alfred Silva, emphasizing the need for clearer identification of federal officers during such operations to prevent confusion and ensure transparency. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, has urged federal authorities to provide a comprehensive account of the incident for the public’s benefit and transparency.

Videos and images shared on social media depicted the aftermath of the shooting, showing the man detained on the ground and later being assisted by the police. Mayor Mamdani condemned the situation as “unconscionable” and pledged to address the issue directly with the President to halt ICE enforcement actions in the city.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions and concerns surrounding immigration enforcement practices, prompting calls for greater transparency and accountability in such operations.
