Iran Foreign Minister Criticizes Trump’s Economic Threats

Published:

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has dismissed recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to execute the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. Araghchi, in a statement on X, criticized Trump’s plan as a diversion from America’s own economic crisis, highlighting the escalating debt and interest costs.

Emphasizing that persisting with ineffective strategies will only lead to more defeats and hostility from Iranians, Araghchi warned that the U.S.’s economic aggression poses a threat not only to Iran but also to the global economy and sovereignty worldwide. These comments followed Trump’s declaration of imposing “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” on Iran due to the failure to secure a lasting deal to end the ongoing conflict.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump cautioned countries about facing “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” if they support Iran in any way. He called for unified action from U.S. allies to isolate and overcome the perceived Iranian threat, without specifying any particular nations or outlining the exact measures the U.S. would implement.

China, a significant buyer of Iran’s oil, faces potential economic repercussions if the U.S. engages in further economic confrontations with Iran involving China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a press briefing, emphasized the ineffectiveness of sanctions and pressure tactics, urging responsible actions and a diplomatic approach from all parties involved.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that a focus on economic strategies could reduce the necessity for large-scale military actions against Tehran. Following the U.S. threats of financial penalties aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, oil prices surged to their highest level in over three weeks.

Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, criticized Trump’s approach, highlighting Iran’s capacity to endure and retaliate against economic pressures. Shapiro expressed concerns about the potential consequences of escalating tensions and emphasized the need for de-escalation to reach a sustainable resolution.

Iran has long endured severe economic sanctions, including recent restrictions imposed by the Trump administration since the conflict’s initiation in February. With thousands of casualties and failed peace negotiations, both countries find themselves at an impasse as a 60-day negotiation period expired without progress. Trump hinted at the possibility of future talks, leaving the situation unresolved for now.
