NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies have made the decision to abandon the mission to save the Swift Observatory, leading to the inevitable re-entry of the telescope later this year. The announcement comes following issues with the Link spacecraft, which was launched to rescue Swift but encountered problems with spacecraft control.
Unfortunately, Link will not be able to capture and maneuver Swift to a higher orbit as originally planned. This means that the telescope, which has been observing astronomical phenomena such as gamma ray bursts and exploding stars for over two decades, will eventually descend through the atmosphere, with its demise expected around October.
NASA had invested $30 million in Katalyst to assist in raising Swift to a more stable orbit. However, due to heightened solar activity, the telescope began to descend faster than anticipated. The rescue spacecraft encountered challenges shortly after its launch in July, spinning uncontrollably. Although efforts were made to stabilize Link, ongoing issues with its navigation persisted.
While the outcome is not what was hoped for, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the value of the attempted mission. Katalyst has announced plans to continue operating Link in close proximity to Swift, showcasing its capabilities for potential future rescue missions.
Swift, launched in 2004, had its scientific operations halted earlier this year to slow its descent. Currently orbiting at 345 kilometers, Katalyst had aimed to raise it back to its original orbit of 600 kilometers for extended observations. The potential rescue of the Hubble Space Telescope, which is also facing orbital decay due to solar activity, now remains uncertain following the conclusion of the Swift mission.
