A fundraiser purportedly created by Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, has been initiated on GoFundMe, urging individuals to donate money to enable his departure from Germany.
Brueckner, a convicted rapist who was recently released from prison after serving time for a sexual assault in Portugal, where Madeleine vanished, launched the fundraising campaign with the goal of collecting €26,000 (£22,860) to facilitate his legal exit from Germany. In a message directed at the country’s taxpayers, he expressed his desire for relief from the constant suspicion and scrutiny he faced, stating that he only lacked the necessary funds to make the move.
He outlined that small donations, such as 10 Euros for a coffee at the airport or 50 Euros for a one-way ticket to a jurisdiction outside Germany’s reach, would contribute to his relocation. Brueckner emphasized the benefit of his departure, suggesting it would bring peace to Germany, allow the media a break, and enable individuals to feel they had contributed positively to society.
Despite receiving unemployment benefits while job-seeking in Germany, Brueckner faced backlash from locals in his new residence, with residents petitioning for his removal and holding an emergency meeting at the town hall. Following public pressure, he was relocated to a different area in southern Germany to make tracking him more difficult.
The fundraising campaign managed to garner €100 in donations before being taken down by GoFundMe due to a violation of their terms of service. A spokesperson confirmed that donors were refunded following the removal of the fundraiser.
