A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing the death of an 85-year-old grandfather while using his mobile phone. Qabir Hussain, 54, was found guilty of dangerous driving after hitting David Brooke in Wakefield. The victim’s granddaughter expressed deep sorrow over losing her beloved grandfather, describing him as a kind, funny, and loving man. She shared how his loss has shattered their family, leaving them with cherished memories.
Following the fatal incident, an investigation revealed that Hussain’s phone was unlocked and in use for emails and web browsing at the time of the collision. DS Nina Roper emphasized the tragic outcome of distracted driving, highlighting the importance of staying focused while behind the wheel. She underscored the significance of avoiding distractions such as phone use, which is among the top factors leading to severe and fatal accidents on the road.
The police stressed that apart from mobile phone usage, other dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing seatbelts, and careless driving, are classified as the “Fatal Five” offenses. They urged drivers to prioritize safety and consider the devastating impact their actions could have on others, encouraging responsible driving habits to prevent further tragedies.
