A casual chat at the church lobby one Sunday led to a parishioner commenting on Lily’s resemblance to her “grandmother” Debbie, sparking conversations about the striking similarities between the two despite no biological relation. Nana Debbie, as Lily fondly calls her, became an integral part of their lives, offering a grandparent-like bond and support.

Debbie’s role as a surrogate grandparent began after Julie and her husband relocated to Ottawa for work, and Lily was born following a challenging journey to parenthood. Lily’s life took a sudden turn when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor at just four months old, leading to a difficult period of hospital stays and treatments.

Despite being retired with no grandchildren of her own, Debbie’s presence provided much-needed support during Lily’s medical journey, accompanying them to various hospitals and being a constant pillar of strength. Lily’s health struggles, including a stroke and vision loss, were met with resilience, culminating in a successful surgery that alleviated her seizures.

Now six years old, Lily continues to thrive with Debbie’s unwavering support, showcasing her resilience by excelling in school despite her challenges. Debbie’s involvement goes beyond familial bonds, as she is compensated for her caregiving role, allowing Julie and her husband to manage Lily’s needs effectively.

The journey of caregiving, though daunting at times, has been made bearable with Debbie’s presence, enabling Julie to find solace in shared experiences and the joy of welcoming a second child, Grace. Lily’s bond with Debbie has not only brought comfort but has also contributed to the healing process amid the family’s adversities.
