Sabrina and Junior Hunt were surprised to discover a rare sighting in Labrador West over the weekend. While boating to their cabin on Shabougamou Lake, about 30 kilometers from Labrador City, they encountered a muskox, initially mistaken for a pile of wood due to its size and color.
The couple shared their experience with CBC News, describing how the muskox came into view as they approached. Video footage recorded by Junior Hunt captured the majestic creature strolling along the shoreline while they observed from a close distance.
Muskox, typically found in Arctic tundra regions, have occasionally been seen in Labrador, with some believed to have migrated from herds in northern Quebec. The Hunts’ encounter in Labrador West was particularly uncommon, prompting surprise from the Department of Forestry, Agriculture, and Lands upon receiving their report along with photographic evidence.
