“Reviving Family Tradition: Bonding Over Food on Beige Mat”

Published:

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my fondest childhood memories involves family dinners on a small beige mat. The sun setting, casting a warm glow, we savored delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken. This tradition, passed down by my father from his upbringing in Lahore, connected us as a family across generations.

As time passed and life got busier, family dinners on the mat became a distant memory. It wasn’t until a Thanksgiving dinner at 23 that I revisited this tradition. Inviting friends of diverse cultural backgrounds to join us, we recreated the circle on the ground, sharing a meal on the worn-out beige mat.

The experience was heartwarming as my father joined us, explaining the tradition to my friends. It bridged the gap between my heritage and Canadian customs. Inspired by this moment, we revived the tradition, gathering on the mat regularly to share stories and food, strengthening our family bond amidst our hectic lives.

Now, as the sun sets, we prioritize dinner time on the beige mat, fostering togetherness and unity. Whether on the mat or at a dining table, the essence of family remains, echoing through generations, just as it did in my father’s childhood and will continue to do so in the future.
