Roblox is experiencing a significant decrease in its financial performance compared to previous years. The well-known gaming platform has seen a loss of about $97.5 billion Cdn in market value over the past year, as reported by stock market data. The company attributes this decline to shifts in user preferences for games and challenges in appealing to an older audience. However, experts suggest that there may be additional factors influencing this downturn.
According to Aaron Langille, who oversees the game design and simulation program at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., various factors are contributing to the platform’s struggles, including its aging status and possibly some unsuccessful decisions. Roblox Corporation’s stock price has plummeted by approximately 70% compared to the same period last year, dropping from $129.63 US ($180.67 Cdn) to $36.96 US ($51.51 Cdn) following an earnings call where revenue fell below expectations.
For those unfamiliar with Roblox, it is a gaming and creation platform where users can engage with games designed by other users. Launched in 2006, the platform has grown to encompass 151.5 million daily users and 3.5 million game developers. The platform offers a wide range of games, including racing, obstacle courses, first-person shooters, platformers, and board games, most of which are multiplayer.
Most Roblox gamers are younger individuals. The company recently introduced identity and age verification procedures, revealing that 35% of verified daily active users were under 13, and 38% were between 13 and 17 years old, indicating that more than half of the active players are minors.
CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen Chopra acknowledged that Roblox fell short of its user spending targets this year, particularly among users under 13. They attributed this shortfall to changes in the platform’s game recommendation algorithm and the current popular games not generating as much revenue as previous hits.
Safety concerns have been a growing issue for Roblox, as the platform includes text and voice communications among users. Efforts to attract older gamers are underway, amidst mounting concerns from authorities regarding the safety of young users interacting on the platform. The RCMP reported over 1,000 incidents involving Roblox between 2024 and 2025. A tragic incident in February 2025 involving a 16-year-old girl from Vancouver highlights the dangers of online interactions, as she took her own life after engaging with a violent online group on Roblox.
In response to safety concerns, Roblox reached an agreement with the state of Nevada to enhance online safety measures and allocate over $10 million US towards education and safety initiatives. Yulia Nevskaya, an assistant professor of marketing at Queen’s University, suggested that safety issues could be impacting the platform’s financial performance.
Despite the recent setbacks, Baszucki and Chopra highlighted positive developments, such as improved user retention due to algorithm changes and international growth in markets like Japan and India. They remain optimistic about the platform’s future, emphasizing the importance of attracting older gamers and diversifying the gaming experience.
In analyzing Roblox’s situation, Cristiano Politowski, an assistant professor of computer science, emphasized the company’s long-term strategy and its ability to adapt to challenges. While facing hurdles, Roblox’s control over its platform and strategic decisions indicate a potential rebound in the future. However, with an evolving user base and changing gaming preferences, Roblox may need to navigate carefully to maintain its appeal to both existing and new players.
