Samsung has recently introduced its latest series of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea has revealed three new devices, with the spotlight on the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a revamped appearance.
In a departure from previous Fold models characterized by a tall cover screen and a square main panel, Samsung has opted for a shorter, wider “passport-style” design. While this may appear unconventional when closed, unfolding the device reveals a practical new shape.
The phone boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display, resembling more of a compact tablet than a traditional smartphone. This design is ideal for activities like streaming movies, binge-watching shows, and gaming on the move.
This launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to unveil its first foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors suggesting a similar design choice. If these rumors come to fruition, Samsung has taken an early lead over its major competitor.
Moreover, Samsung is not just ahead in design but also in other aspects. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Samsung’s slimmest and lightest Fold device yet, weighing only 180g. It features an upgraded hinge for improved durability and reduced risk of damage over time.
Upon unfolding, the enhanced display incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating to enhance visibility in bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, coupled with a 4,800mAh battery that can charge up to 63% in just half an hour, the device offers efficient performance.
Equipped with a dual-camera system for photography, Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches, and Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI tools for enhanced features, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting from £1,699 for pre-order. In contrast, Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, projected to be more expensive at over £2,000, is not expected until later this year.
In addition to the Fold 8, Samsung has also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling the previous Fold 7 in appearance but receiving upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera enhancement. The rear camera setup now includes a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra features a new Flex Titanium hinge and an enhanced display structure for increased strength and refinement. Samsung claims to have reduced the crease issue, while a new opening mechanism ensures a smoother and more natural unfolding process.
A larger 5,000mAh battery with rapid charging capabilities, reaching 67% charge in around 30 minutes, offers extended usage.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is priced starting from £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s favored clamshell design but becoming thinner and lighter.
Enhancements to the external cover display, a reinforced aluminum hinge, improved performance, and upgraded camera features are among the improvements in the Galaxy Z Flip 8.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is priced starting from £1,149.
