A recent quality of life study by Halifax focusing on ideal locations for families in the UK has highlighted that the top spots are concentrated in one particular region. The survey examined various factors such as employment opportunities, housing sizes, internet connectivity, traffic conditions, and overall well-being of residents. Notably, most of the highly ranked places were found in Scotland, with a few entries from both the North and South of England. However, the majority of the top-ranking areas were Scottish destinations.
The Orkney Islands, located in Scotland, have consistently secured the top position as the best place to raise a family in the UK since 2015. This recognition is attributed to several factors like high employment rates, low crime levels, impressive academic achievements, and smaller class sizes in primary schools. James Stockan, the leader of the Orkney Islands council, expressed delight at this achievement, praising the local community for their traditional values combined with forward-thinking attitudes that create a unique living environment.
Situated off the northern coast of mainland Scotland, the Orkney Islands boast stunning natural landscapes and panoramic sea views, offering residents a refreshing and picturesque setting. The region’s rich historical heritage is evident through its numerous ancient monuments, including the renowned Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site and other well-preserved sites like Taversoe Tuick and Midhowe Broch.
In addition to the Orkney Islands, the survey also identified the Shetland Islands and the Western Isles, both in Scotland, as top destinations for quality family living in the UK. The Shetland Islands were noted for their exceptional employment rates, surpassing the national average, while the Western Isles stood out for having the highest personal well-being rating among the surveyed areas.
The continued success of the Orkney Islands in providing an exceptional quality of life is attributed to factors such as robust education and employment opportunities, low crime rates, and a high level of resident satisfaction. The region’s vast open spaces and natural beauty contribute to its appeal, making it a desirable place to live and work.
