An individual in the military conducted a heinous sextortion scheme where he coerced young individuals into engaging in sexual activities for him.
Austen Fleming, 29, described as “depraved,” enticed nearly 90 minors online while serving as a soldier at RAF Dishforth in North Yorkshire. Using fake social media profiles posing as an attractive woman, the predatory individual recorded his interactions with these minors to manipulate them into sending more explicit content.
In cases where the minors resisted, the soldier threatened to expose the images to their relatives and acquaintances, using this as leverage to extort them into providing more explicit content.
Initially apprehended on November 14, 2022, Fleming’s residence was searched for evidence, revealing to law enforcement the extensive nature of his crimes, necessitating tracing victims nationwide.
He was subsequently detained on suspicion of producing indecent images of minors and facilitating a child sex offense. Fleming underwent questioning but was released on bail as authorities gathered evidence. Investigators determined that the offender committed his abhorrent acts between December 2020 and January 2023.
On December 16, 2024, Fleming was rearrested for multiple offenses, including blackmail, inducing a minor to engage in sexual activities, promoting the exploitation of a minor, and circulating indecent images of minors.
According to the Daily Record, one 15-year-old boy, deeply affected by Fleming’s sextortion threats on Snapchat, attempted suicide. Others were left in tears and trembling with fear due to the trauma inflicted on them by Fleming, as revealed in Leeds Crown Court.
Fleming, a former member of the 6 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, received a 24-year prison sentence and was ordered to serve an additional three years under supervision.
He confessed to 83 cyber-enabled child sexual abuse and exploitation offenses, with victims as young as 10 and as old as 17.
Terrorized victims implored Fleming not to disseminate their images online, but their appeals only led to more explicit and perverse demands. For instance, he instructed a 15-year-old victim to send explicit videos, cautioning him: “Send them or the videos will be made public.”
Fleming compelled minors to send explicit images taken beside sleeping siblings and record sexual content involving family pets. One victim was so traumatized that he vomited when recounting to his mother what he had been coerced to do.
Judge Ray Singh highlighted how social media provided Fleming with effortless access to victims, stating, “Despite your relatively young age, your depravity had no limits. There are 61 identified individual victims.” He added, “There are 27 victims yet to be identified. Hence, you targeted nearly 100 victims, each a real child subjected to abuse by you.”
Detective Constable Tom Sutcliffe, leading the investigation for the Online Child Abuse Team, remarked, “Fleming is undeniably a depraved criminal who poses a significant threat to young individuals. He now faces an extensive prison term and will be closely monitored by authorities for life.”
