“Siblings’ Journey: Toronto Woman Cares for Autistic Brother”

Published:

Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, faced a transformative experience this summer, losing her mother and taking on the role of her big brother’s primary caregiver. Juggling the responsibilities of caring for her neurodivergent sibling, Stuart, has presented both joyful moments and challenges.

Stuart, an autistic left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires specialized care due to his physical and emotional needs. From handfeeding to assisting with daily activities and managing his mood swings triggered by loud noises, Abrahamsohn navigates the complexities of caring for her brother with love and dedication.

Reflecting on their childhood, Abrahamsohn recalls moments of shame and sadness as she witnessed her brother’s autistic behaviors, which were misunderstood by others. Despite their differences, she acknowledges her own struggles with ADHD and the need to mask her true self in social situations.

As they now share a living space, Abrahamsohn strives to create a supportive environment for both herself and Stuart. By embracing their unique traits and fostering open communication, she aims to provide a harmonious home for two middle-aged siblings with diverse needs.

While sacrifices such as giving up personal hobbies have been made, Abrahamsohn cherishes the opportunity to strengthen her bond with Stuart and make up for past regrets. Through collaboration with caregivers and a positive mindset, she is committed to building a fulfilling living arrangement that prioritizes their well-being and mutual understanding.
