Joe Cullen has taken to social media to criticize Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of dishonest behavior. Cullen, hailing from Bradford, faced a disappointing loss to the Austrian player in a tense second-round match at the World Darts Championship.
Despite initially trailing, Suljovic staged an impressive comeback to claim a 3-1 victory over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the game, Cullen displayed signs of impatience, glancing at his watch sarcastically and muttering “hurry up” to himself as Suljovic, aged 53, took his time preparing for each throw at the oche.
While Suljovic is known for his deliberate playing pace, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly frustrated with his opponent’s extended routines and celebratory moments. Tensions escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen engaging in a heated exchange with Suljovic, who responded with laughter.
As Cullen exited the stage, he paused, turned back, and gave Suljovic a cold stare as the Austrian basked in the applause from the crowd. Cullen did not hold back in expressing his anger on social media, stating, “If that’s darts, I want no part of it! Always liked Mensur away from the board, but that behavior was evident to all! I don’t believe I’m alone in this sentiment. While some may justify it as part of the game, it’s still dishonest! That’s not how darts should be played.”
When questioned about Cullen’s outburst and whether he had apologized for his slow play in the post-match press conference, Suljovic seemed puzzled. He responded, “I have never personally apologized to Joe Cullen. I play my game on that stage, so what’s his issue? I might apologize to the referee, but for Joe Cullen? Never. Everyone has their own style of play.”
Further asked about the incident, Suljovic added, “I don’t understand his grievances. What is the problem? I provided him with opportunities by missing some shots. I always play darts correctly. Maybe my celebrations are too enthusiastic, but I have respect for Joe Cullen. He is a good person, but…”
In the upcoming round, Suljovic could potentially face off against defending world champion Luke Littler. Littler, an 18-year-old, will compete against darts player and NHS area manager David Davies in his next match.
The PDC World Darts Championship commenced on December 11, and fans can catch all the live action exclusively through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
