Flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials, as outlined in a recent study. Cosmic radiation originating from space, though minimal on Earth’s surface, poses significant exposure risks for individuals operating at high altitudes.
Previous studies have hinted at elevated cancer death rates among frequent flyers, especially pilots and flight attendants. A new study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed national data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on occupations and radiation-linked cancer death rates. The study identified flight attendants as having the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers, followed by pilots.
The research dismisses the belief that flight crews’ increased skin cancer risk stems from sunny layovers, attributing it instead to occupational radiation exposure. This challenges the assumption that sun exposure during layovers is the primary factor behind skin cancer rates in pilots.
Flight attendants were found to have a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher probability. Despite limitations in the study, such as unknown individual exposure levels and potential misclassification of occupations on death certificates, the findings underscore the need to address radiation exposure risks in the aviation industry seriously.
The study emphasizes the importance of heightened vigilance among medical professionals caring for flight crews, recommending regular skin examinations, early or more frequent mammograms for female crew members, and increased cancer monitoring for these occupational groups. The lack of federal dose limits or monitoring requirements for aircrews by the Federal Aviation Administration raises concerns about managing and mitigating radiation exposure risks effectively.
