The imposition of new trade restrictions by President Donald Trump on Canada will impact several iconic brands from New Brunswick.
Trump’s recent proclamations will prohibit the import of certain products into the U.S. and subject others to a 50% tariff increase.
Among the banned imports are beer and molasses, affecting Moosehead Breweries and Crosby’s Molasses.
These new tariffs will take effect on September 15, while the import ban will be enforced starting on September 29, as per Trump’s declaration.
Additionally, certain aluminum products, furniture, and wood or paper items will face a 50% tariff.
Andrew Oland, the president and CEO of Moosehead Breweries, mentioned that the brewery is endeavoring to dispatch cases before the ban becomes active.
“We are collaborating closely with our U.S. importer and distributor to secure as many shipments as possible to the U.S. over the next three weeks,” stated Oland.
He noted that these cases will be subject to the 50% tariffs that were implemented in August.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ban of Canadian alcohol products, motorcycles and molasses in the latest retaliation of the trade dispute between the countries.
Oland emphasized the importance of maintaining shelf space in U.S. stores despite the tariffs. He pointed out that 15% of the brewery’s production is intended for the U.S. market, spanning all 50 states.
“Stores like Hannaford in Maine or Publix in Florida don’t like seeing empty shelves. If our product isn’t available, they will replace it with something else,” Oland explained.
