“UK Hits Record High Temps Amid Heat Wave”

Published:

The United Kingdom witnessed its highest temperature of the year on Thursday, hitting 38.1 degrees Celsius in west London, confirmed by the national weather service, during an ongoing period of intense hot weather across Europe. The Met Office noted that this temperature exceeded the previous peak of 38 degrees Celsius recorded on June 26, while still remaining below the UK’s August record of 38.5 degrees Celsius established in 2003.

Similar to France, the UK is currently enduring its fifth heat wave of the year, with the first occurring in May. The recent extreme heat has led to a record number of days in 2026 with temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius, totaling four, and matching the year 2022 with two days reaching 38 degrees Celsius.

France has experienced even higher temperatures, approaching 41 degrees Celsius in various regions from Aquitaine in the southwest to the Rhone River valley in the east, as reported by the national weather service. The most intense heat is predicted to shift eastwards away from the UK and France by Friday, gradually subsiding over the weekend.

Both Britain and France have been struggling to cope with the elevated temperatures this summer, lacking widespread air conditioning facilities outside of commercial establishments. In the UK, nurses have suffered heat exhaustion due to the lack of cooling systems in aging hospital buildings, as highlighted by the Royal College of Nursing.

The prolonged heatwave has exacerbated drought conditions across Europe, leading to crop failures and depleted water sources for households, agriculture, and the environment. In response, Southern Water in England’s southern region has requested a rare drought order to restrict non-essential water usage, citing a severe lack of rainfall jeopardizing water supplies in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

With wildfires posing a significant risk due to the dry conditions, authorities in both Britain and France are on high alert. England and Wales have recorded 1,017 wildfires this year, matching last year’s record-breaking total, emphasizing the need for the UK to adapt to the changing climate.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is contemplating a ban on disposable barbecues to mitigate the fire risk amid the ongoing extreme heat. He emphasized the importance of discouraging outdoor barbecue usage in these conditions to prevent potential wildfires.

French firefighters are also facing challenges as they navigate a demanding summer, with some considering strike action to demand additional personnel and resources to handle the escalating weather-related incidents. Recent fires in various regions of France, including a significant blaze near Bordeaux, have further underscored the urgency of addressing the impacts of extreme weather events.
