Virgin Media has recently slashed the price of its fastest broadband package to a new all-time low. The company has launched an unexpected sale, reducing the cost of its ultra-fast Gig1 Fibre Broadband by over £70.
This broadband plan offers lightning-fast speeds of up to 1,130Mbps, typically priced at £29.99 per month. However, during this promotional period, customers can now enjoy this high-speed service for just £26.99 per month. This discounted rate translates to a total savings of £72 over the 24-month contract, averaging around 87p per day.
Virgin Media claims that this deal represents the “lowest ever price” for its Gig1 plan. With such rapid speeds, users can download a feature-length HD film in less than 30 seconds and have a 50GB PS5 game ready to play in under seven minutes.
Although this offer seems enticing, it comes with a caveat. The reduced price of £26.99 will increase twice within the minimum term of the contract, rising to £30.99 from April 2027 and then to £34.99 from April 2028. Additionally, the ultra-fast 1,130Mbps speeds may not be available in all UK locations, so interested individuals should check for service availability using Virgin’s postcode checker.
In comparison to competitors like Sky, Virgin’s Gig1 deal at £26.99 presents a compelling option. While Sky has lowered the price of its 900Mbps plan to £28, it remains pricier than Virgin’s offering and delivers slower speeds. Similarly, BT’s 900Mbps connection comes at a higher cost of £37.99, prompting consumers to explore alternative network providers. Some emerging alternative networks in the UK, known as alt-nets, are providing competitive pricing compared to established brands.
Community Fibre, for instance, currently offers 1Gbps speeds for just £25 per month, with the first three months free and fixed prices throughout the contract. However, this provider serves only London and select south-eastern locations.
Not everyone requires super-fast speeds around 1Gbps, so it’s essential to assess individual needs before committing to a lengthy broadband contract. For instance, a couple streaming Netflix daily in a flat may suffice with speeds of around 100Mbps, while larger households engaging in work-from-home activities, film downloads, and online gaming might benefit from speeds of at least 300Mbps. Choosing Virgin’s 1Gbps fibre is akin to having a wide motorway directly into your home, ensuring a smooth digital experience.
