University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize recipient, has been honored with an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a lighthearted spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, highlight unconventional and creative academic research. Thurairajah and his team secured this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a urinal that minimizes splashing.
When informed of their win by his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah expressed delight. The team experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to achieve a splash-free solution. Thurairajah emphasized the Nautilus design’s superiority in reducing splashing and ease of cleaning compared to the Cornucopia.
At the award ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats, ready to be recognized for their quirky research. Despite the unconventional nature of their study, Thurairajah clarified that no actual urine was involved in their experiments for hygiene and scientific accuracy reasons.
While acknowledging the humorous aspect of their work, Thurairajah emphasized the practicality of their research in enhancing public restroom facilities. The study’s results were published in the journal PNAS Nexus, showcasing its scientific value.
Apart from the University of Waterloo team, other Canadian researchers were also honored at the ceremony. University of Toronto researchers received the Economics Prize for their study on unethical behavior among affluent individuals, while McGill University scientists were part of the team recognized for using mosquito proboscises in 3D printing technology.
The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after decades in the U.S. due to visa issues. Thurairajah, highlighting the international collaboration in scientific endeavors, supported the decision to ensure global participation in such events.
