“England’s Jacks Joins Ashes Squad for Gabba Test”

Published:

Wildcard selection Will Jacks has surprisingly been chosen to join England’s lineup for the second Ashes Test, taking the place of Shoaib Bashir in Brisbane.

Jacks, known for his past Test appearances on Pakistan’s spinning pitches and his recent focus on limited-overs cricket, was an unexpected addition to the squad. However, he is now slated to participate in a crucial day/night match at the Gabba.

Due to fast bowler Mark Wood’s injury sidelining him, it was anticipated that England would make a lineup change after their rapid defeat in Perth. They opted for a slow bowling alternative over backup seamers Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts.

Bashir, England’s primary spinner for the last two years, has accumulated 68 wickets in 19 matches but has struggled to shake off his “work in progress” tag. Despite being part of the initial squad of 12 for the first Test, Bashir has been replaced by Jacks, who brings superior batting skills and sharper fielding to the team.

Jacks showcased his talents during a net session where he bowled at Stokes under lights, securing his place in the lineup. His off-breaks add value, and his performance in the pre-series warm-up match for England Lions, where he dismissed Stokes, Joe Root, and Harry Brook, further solidified his selection.

Although Jacks had a promising Test debut in Multan with six wickets, he had limited opportunities in subsequent innings. In the previous summer, he participated in only three first-class games for Surrey, taking five wickets at an average of 38.80.

Stokes, discussing the decision to include a spinner in the bowling attack, acknowledged the impact of Nathan Lyon in day/night matches for Australia. England’s focus remains on their pace attack, with Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Stokes himself expected to lead the bowling unit effectively.

The surprise inclusion of Jacks was justified by men’s cricket managing director Rob Key, emphasizing Jacks’ dual capabilities as a spinner and a solid batsman. Key expressed confidence in Jacks’ composure under pressure and adaptability to the conditions in Australia.
