“Nigel Farage Criticized for Spectator Stunt at PMQs”

Published:

Nigel Farage faced criticism for a staged act during Prime Minister’s Questions. The leader of Reform UK opted to sit in the spectators’ gallery in the House of Commons instead of the MPs’ benches, expressing frustration at not being selected to speak during the debate.

Accompanied by Brexit backer Arron Banks, Farage portrayed himself as a mere observer, seemingly disregarding the random selection process for MPs’ questions in PMQs. Fellow MPs mocked the right-wing figure for his attention-seeking maneuver, highlighting his frequent absences from parliamentary sessions and suggesting that his constituents were not his top priority.

Following a scathing rebuke from Keir Starmer for disparaging Britain during a US trip, Farage defended his absence by claiming he lacked the opportunity to respond to PM and Labour MPs’ attacks during PMQs. This led to Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant labeling Farage as a sideline critic who evades accountability for his policies.

Critics, including a Labour source, accused Farage and his Reform MPs of prioritizing social media appearances over parliamentary duties. They urged Farage to reflect on the potential harm his proposals could inflict on the country during his self-imposed parliamentary absence.

Labour MPs and sources emphasized the importance of Farage fulfilling his elected responsibilities within the chamber and criticized his habitual absence. One Labour MP questioned Farage’s understanding of PMQs procedures, suggesting he should participate like other backbenchers. Additionally, a Lib Dem spokesperson criticized Farage for a pattern of condescending behavior.

Farage’s recent complaint about his inability to speak during PMQs highlights the frustration he faces in engaging in parliamentary debates. PMQs involve a randomized selection process determining which MPs pose questions to the PM. The official Opposition Leader and the leader of the third-largest party also have designated question slots during PMQs.
