Ian Botham has amassed over £225,000 through the sale of his treasured memorabilia from the 1981 Ashes series. The renowned former England cricket icon auctioned off more than 240 items from his illustrious career in 2023.

With England gearing up for a resurgence in the upcoming Ashes series, fans are optimistic that the team can draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes triumph over four decades ago. At the auction held in the Long Room at the KIA Oval, Botham bid farewell to significant items from his Ashes victory.

Notable items included the red cricket ball used by Botham to claim five wickets for one run at Edgbaston, which fetched £20,000. Another highlight was the stump extracted by Botham after the famous Headingley win, selling for £11,000, along with his personal man of the match medal that went under the hammer for £19,000.

The Headingley victory marked a pivotal moment for the England team, with Botham’s exceptional performance leading to an unexpected triumph despite odds of 500/1. Botham’s unbeaten 149 and Bob Willis’ eight wickets orchestrated one of cricket’s most remarkable comebacks.

Botham, now 70, also sold a stump labeled ‘Headingley 81’ and the Edgbaston stump for £7,000 each. Other items included his player of the season medal (£8,000), England test blazer (£1,800), Somerset cap (£2,700), and a ‘baggy green’ cap gifted by former Australian captain Allan Border (£13,000).

Furthermore, Botham parted ways with his England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup in Australia for £11,000, and his BBC SPOTY Lifetime award received in 2004 fetched £3,600.

The decision to sell the memorabilia was driven by Botham’s desire to downsize, as revealed by auctioneer Tim Knight. The auction was managed by Knight’s Auctioneers in Norwich, Norfolk.

Knight emphasized Botham’s legendary status in cricket and the significance of the 1981 Ashes-related lots, known as ‘Botham’s Ashes’. He acknowledged Botham’s exceptional contributions to the sport and highlighted his enduring impact and never-say-die attitude.

Overall, the auction marked a significant chapter in Botham’s career and personal journey, reflecting his iconic status and lasting legacy in the realm of cricket.
