“Hamilton Penalized in Mexico City F1 Race Drama”

Published:

The stewards of the Formula 1 race in Mexico City have provided insights into their decision to penalize Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton came under scrutiny for veering off the track while in a duel with Max Verstappen. Initially, he was investigated but cleared for not utilizing the designated escape route as directed by the race director.

In their explanation for not penalizing the Ferrari driver for this infraction, the stewards stated that Hamilton had locked brakes, preventing him from using the prescribed escape path due to excessive speed. Consequently, they took no further action. However, they ruled that the Ferrari driver gained an unfair advantage by going off track and imposed a 10-second time penalty.

Despite sitting in third place before the penalty, Hamilton dropped to eighth after serving the sanction during his pit stop. The stewards detailed their decision in a separate report, noting that Hamilton had left the track, cut a corner, and gained an advantage by overtaking Verstappen without giving back the position.

Upon learning of his penalty via radio communication with his race engineer, Hamilton expressed frustration, citing poor grip on the track. He voiced his disappointment with the outcome but acknowledged the nature of motor racing.

During subsequent media interviews, Hamilton appeared visibly annoyed and briefly commented on the race result, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the sport. When asked about the incident leading to his penalty, he defended his actions, describing the challenging track conditions and expressing relief at securing some points.
