“Storm Benjamin: UK Braces for 75mph Winds”

Published:

The Met Office has issued fresh weather alerts as Storm Benjamin is expected to bring strong 75mph winds to Britain. These yellow warnings cover a large part of southern England, the east Midlands, Wales, and Yorkshire, and will be in effect until 9 pm tomorrow. The storm, officially named Storm Benjamin, is predicted to bring up to two inches of rain over a 21-hour period starting tonight.

This weather event follows closely after Storm Amy caused disruption earlier this month. Another wind warning is in place for tomorrow, covering the east of England to Scarborough, with gusts of up to 75mph possible. Additionally, South West England, Wales, and specific areas like Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall are under a yellow wind alert for Thursday.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern from the Met Office stated that a deepening low pressure system will result in strong winds, especially around southern and eastern coasts. British Weather Services’ senior meteorologist Jim Dale warned of heavy downpours and gales on Thursday, with risks of structural wind damage and flooding in central and eastern England.

According to Dale, gusts of up to 70mph are expected, urging people in these regions to stay indoors and heed warnings. The Met Office also cautioned about strong winds and rain moving northwards from Wednesday evening, with further weather warnings for rain and wind expected in the next 24 hours. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris highlighted the expected heavy rain and strong winds moving across the UK on Thursday, leading to challenging driving conditions and potential flooding in some areas.
