A Glasgow woman, Carol Butterly, faced a life-altering moment this year when she discovered a cancerous lump. The lump was found shortly after Valentine’s Day 2025 when she sat down post-shower and felt the abnormality. Prompted by her husband’s advice, Carol wasted no time booking a medical appointment, leading to a swift process of tests, including a mammogram, biopsy, and subsequent surgery. Initially anticipated to only require the removal of the lump, further examinations revealed the necessity of a full mastectomy.
Despite the challenging diagnosis, Carol has maintained a positive outlook and a strong sense of humor throughout her journey. She emphasized the importance of humor in coping with the situation, noting how she surprised her friends with her upbeat demeanor during their visits. Continuously supported by the Beatson Cancer Charity, Carol expressed gratitude for the exceptional care received at the facility, highlighting the camaraderie and sense of belonging among patients.
Currently undergoing treatment and regular monitoring, Carol is feeling well and embracing each day with a forward-looking attitude. Encouraging others during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she stresses the significance of self-checks and early intervention. Turning her experience into a source of support for others, Carol authored a book titled “Didn’t Expect That, Did You,” with all proceeds directed to the Beatson Cancer Charity.
Reflecting on her journey, Carol acknowledged the profound impact of a cancer diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of sharing personal experiences to aid those facing similar challenges. Her message to individuals navigating cancer echoes a sentiment of vigilance, positivity, and resilience, urging proactive health management and a balanced approach to medical appointments.
Chloe Coghill, a Community Fundraiser at Beatson Cancer Charity, expressed gratitude for Carol’s generosity in sharing her story and contributing the proceeds from her book to support the charity’s efforts.
