A mother is facing a devastating situation after a fire destroyed her residence, leaving her and her seven children without any belongings. Hayley Lundie, 30, expressed feeling trapped in a nightmarish scenario following the incident at her council-owned home in Knowle, Bristol. The fire broke out on Monday afternoon, leading firefighters from Bedminster and Temple to swiftly respond and extinguish the blaze.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Hayley revealed that she had been struggling for a year to get Bristol City Council to address faulty electrical issues in her home, which a surveyor had deemed unsafe.
According to the fire service spokesperson, crews arrived at the scene on that Monday to tackle the house fire using high-pressure hose reels and safety jets. The ongoing investigation aims to unveil the origins of the fire.
Hayley recounted her efforts to seek repairs from Bristol City Council for the electrical faults, stating that negligence had led to the catastrophic loss. The family had moved into the council property in April 2024, and now, they are confronted with the daunting task of finding new accommodation after losing all their possessions.
She detailed the challenges she faced in dealing with the housing issues, including the lack of action from the council despite reported safety concerns. The situation worsened when they were left without hot water and heating due to electrical failures, prompting them to seek alternative arrangements.
Hayley’s distress escalated when a second electrician highlighted the unsafe conditions of the property, urging for immediate action. Eventually, with no resolution in sight, she had to declare herself and her family homeless, leading to the tragic event of the house fire.
Following the devastating incident, the community has rallied support for Hayley and her children, with a fundraising page set up to assist them in the aftermath. Bristol City Council provided temporary accommodation, food vouchers, and clothing support for the affected family while investigations into the fire’s cause continue.
