Russian forces under the leadership of Vladimir Putin have issued a peculiar threat to NATO by navigating a boat displaying the flag of the infamous Wagner private army near the EU border. Surveillance footage captured the border force vessel, associated with Moscow’s FSB security service, on the Narva River, in close proximity to the NATO country’s border. Estonia, concerned about potential invasion by the Kremlin, has requested an official explanation from Russia, which has not yet responded to the incident.
The Wagner private military company, once comprising tens of thousands of mercenaries, played a significant role in Putin’s initial incursion into Ukraine before a falling out with their commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin – who was previously Putin’s chef. In June 2023, Prigozhin orchestrated a failed coup against Putin’s regime due to plans to integrate all personnel under the Russian army’s authority. Two months later, Prigozhin perished in a plane crash, widely believed to be a Kremlin-sanctioned assassination.
Presently reduced in size with an estimated 5,000 soldiers, Wagner continues to execute military operations on behalf of the Kremlin in Africa and potentially maintains a limited presence in Ukraine. The display of the Wagner flag on the Narva River, marking the tense border between Russia and NATO member Estonia, has raised suspicions of the group’s renewed disloyalty to Putin.
Reacting to the incident, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna remarked, “We can only speculate whether the spirit of ‘chef’ Prigozhin lives on in Russia, or if the Wagnerites are attempting another go at Moscow or perhaps heading for St. Petersburg this time? This spectacle, however, confirms the fact that Russia’s ‘iron’ system is cracking due to the war of aggression it initiated and the sustained pressure exerted by the West. We can also confirm that whatever the Russians attempt on the Narva River, it is being closely monitored by us.” The Estonian foreign ministry expressed skepticism, stating, “From our perspective, it appears they have already annexed the Russian border guards. Who knows…”
The Russia-Estonia border spans 183 miles, with approximately 900 British troops deployed in Estonia under Operation Cabrit to bolster NATO’s presence alongside French and local forces. The primary deployment is at the Tapa military camp, situated around 80 miles from the Russian border.
