A construction firm has gone into administration, jeopardizing more than 400 jobs. Caldwell Construction Limited, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory. The company specializes in groundworks and civil engineering and operates from offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.
Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, mentioned the challenging conditions faced by the construction industry, such as rising costs, project delays, and market instability. Despite generating a turnover of £58.4 million last year, Caldwell’s operational profit remained below £1 million. Smith noted that recent pressure on cash flow and operations had intensified the company’s financial struggles.
Efforts by the PKF Littlejohn Advisory team in Manchester and Leeds to explore solutions for Caldwell proved unsuccessful, leading to the decision to enter insolvency. Joint Administrator Oliver Collinge stated that the focus now is on assisting employees and stakeholders while evaluating the business’s status and assets.
In a separate incident, energy provider Consumer Energy Solutions in south Wales also collapsed into administration, affecting nearly 300 employees. This unrelated event saw the company ceasing trading immediately, impacting workers in Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Employees were informed of the job risks just before the holiday season, causing distress among the workforce.
Consumer Energy Solutions attributed the restructuring and job losses to the conclusion of the UK Government-backed Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme, which the company operated. This initiative, supporting home energy upgrades like insulation and solar panels, is set to end this year. Administrators James Saunders and Michael Lennon from KR8 Advisory Limited were appointed to oversee Consumer Energy Solutions’ administration, leading to the discontinuation of all ongoing work for customers. The administration solely involves Consumer Energy Solutions Limited and not other entities within the City Energy Group.
