“NHS Denies Girl with Kabuki Syndrome Vital Wheelchair”

Published:

A young girl, Orla, who was initially deemed healthy by medical professionals is now facing mobility challenges and has been denied a specialized wheelchair by the NHS. Orla, born with several health issues including heart defects, kidney abnormalities, and hip socket malformation, has experienced ongoing health complications since birth.

Orla, now 10 years old, has a rare genetic condition known as Kabuki Syndrome, leading to severe physical impairments such as severely dislocated kneecaps and other skeletal abnormalities. Due to her condition, Orla struggles to walk, often falling, and can only cover short distances with difficulty using a self-propelled wheelchair.

Despite her mother, Faye, advocating for a powered wheelchair to improve Orla’s quality of life, the NHS rejected the request. Faye initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the much-needed wheelchair. Expressing her desperation, Faye emphasized that Orla is confined to a bed due to her inability to move, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.

Faye recounted instances where medical professionals overlooked critical symptoms, delaying Orla’s diagnosis and treatment. Despite Faye’s persistence in raising concerns about her daughter’s health, medical staff reassured her that Orla was fine until further evaluations revealed significant issues requiring corrective surgeries and interventions.

The prolonged medical journey has taken a toll on Orla’s mental and physical well-being, resulting in trauma and hindering her educational progress. Faye lamented the impact on Orla’s development, emphasizing the need for timely and accurate medical attention to prevent further suffering.
