“Business Secretary likens Farage to Enoch Powell”

Published:

Business Secretary Peter Kyle has likened Nigel Farage to the late politician Enoch Powell, stating that Farage embodies the politics of Powell in today’s context. Kyle made these remarks at the Co-operative Party conference, where he criticized the Reform UK leader.

During his speech, Kyle emphasized the importance of achieving sustained economic growth to rebuild trust in politics and democracy. He highlighted that without such growth, extremist ideologies from the far right, like those propagated by Reform UK, become more appealing to the public.

Referring to Enoch Powell’s controversial “rivers of blood” speech in 1968, Kyle drew parallels between Powell’s rhetoric and Farage’s political stance. This is not the first time Kyle has clashed with Farage, as he previously criticized Farage’s opposition to the Government’s Online Safety Act.

The conference also featured Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who underscored the need to bridge divides within communities and work towards collective success. Reed, like Kyle, condemned parties like Reform UK that thrive on societal discord and decline.

The Co-operative Party, affiliated with Labour through an electoral pact, continues to advocate for unity and community prosperity, emphasizing the shared goal of building stronger, more inclusive societies.
