The owner of the top pub in Britain is cautioning about a challenging situation ahead due to increased costs. George Greenaway and his spouse Louise are enjoying their victory as the Tamworth Tap was named the National Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale for the third time. Despite opening only eight years ago in a former shop in Staffordshire town, the inn has received this prestigious accolade after winning Camra’s award in 2022 and 2023.
Facing the same struggles as many other pubs, the Tamworth Tap proprietor expressed concerns over rising expenses and evolving drinking patterns that have resulted in over 2,000 pub closures since 2020. Predictions suggest that without prompt intervention, the closure rate could escalate to six pubs per day in 2026.
The Mirror has been at the forefront of advocating for local pubs through its Your Pub Needs You campaign. The Labour party has committed to revamping property taxes to provide enduring relief for pubs and other businesses as pandemic support measures are phased out and properties are revalued for the first time since before the pandemic.
In response to the challenges, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a relief package of around £300 million to assist pubs in managing the post-pandemic support adjustments. Mr. Greenaway highlighted the multiple hurdles faced by pubs, including increased living wages, soaring energy expenses, and changing consumer habits, emphasizing the critical need for support.
Despite the impending £20,000 hike in the rates bill for Tamworth Tap, Mr. Greenaway remains hopeful for meaningful assistance from Labour while criticizing the Treasury’s actions over the years. Starting from humble beginnings, the pub has expanded into a multi-floor establishment with a microbrewery taphouse and a distinctive interior featuring Tudor beams and community-focused events.
The pub’s pivotal role in combating loneliness, particularly evident during the lockdowns, underscores its significance beyond being a mere drinking establishment. Amidst rising costs hindering staff expansion and business growth plans, Mr. Greenaway stressed the importance of addressing the key issue of rates to safeguard the industry’s future.
