“UPS Cargo Jet Crash in Kentucky Claims 12 Lives”

Published:

A tragic incident unfolded in Kentucky as a UPS cargo jet crashed, resulting in a fireball and claiming the lives of 12 individuals. Investigators revealed that the catastrophe occurred when the aircraft’s engine detached during takeoff.

The latest information on the investigation was disclosed following the surge in the death toll from the crash, which transpired after the plane departed from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening. Security footage from the airport captured the moment the left engine separated from the wing of the 34-year-old McDonnell Douglas MD-11 while it was accelerating down the runway. The jet burst into flames and collided with nearby industrial structures.

During a briefing, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) official Todd Inman reported, “We have reviewed airport CCTV footage, which shows the left engine detaching from the wing during takeoff.” He added, “A significant fire erupted near the left wing during takeoff.”

Mr. Inman described the extensive debris field, spanning roughly half a mile, stating that the scattered airplane parts make the chances of finding survivors slim. Despite ongoing search efforts in the charred crash area, the likelihood of locating survivors is low.

The ill-fated flight, headed to Honolulu, briefly gained altitude before crashing outside the airport perimeter, striking Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Autoparts. The crash ignited a massive blaze that spread half a mile through the industrial zone.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency to expedite assistance to the scene. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed that the death toll had climbed to 12, including three UPS crew members, multiple ground workers, and a child. Mayor Greenberg expressed deep sorrow over the rising death toll and stated that several individuals remain unaccounted for. Additionally, 11 people sustained injuries in the incident.
