A video capturing a dramatic daytime street ambush outside a phone shop shows an off-duty police officer intervening by shooting a suspected robber and assisting in the capture of another individual.

The incident took place on Avenida Paula Ferreira in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, yesterday. The off-duty officer, identified as Luiz Fernando Souza Nunes de Viveiros, was inside a mobile phone store when he witnessed two men confronting a delivery driver who had just left the premises.

Upon one of the suspects announcing a robbery, the officer drew his weapon and fired a shot, hitting one of the suspects, identified as 26-year-old Michael Santos Preto, in the back. Preto succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The second suspect, 40-year-old Joao Renato Macedo dos Reis, attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by members of the public nearby.

Although dos Reis tried to use a gun against the officer, the weapon malfunctioned and did not discharge, as per the official report. The area was secured as forensic teams arrived on-site to gather evidence.

The Sao Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed that the suspects resisted arrest, resulting in the death of one suspect and the arrest of the other at the scene.
