McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing frustration over the escalating price of a hash brown, which has soared to nearly £2 at certain locations, as per a viral post on X social media platform. The post features an image of a McDonald’s menu board displaying a £1.99 price tag for a hash brown at the specific outlet.
Shared widely with over 459,000 views, the post was accompanied by a remark stating, “£2 for a single hash brown. We’re calling it quits.” Responses poured in, with one individual stating, “It’s become outrageous, I rarely visit but it used to be a budget-friendly choice.” Another commenter suggested opting for the sausage sandwich at that price, while a third simply exclaimed, “Crazy.”
Another commentator praised the hash browns as a favorite but deemed the £2 price excessive, reminiscing about the days when they were priced at 59p.
A McDonald’s representative clarified that many of their restaurants are independently owned and operated by franchisees who set their own pricing, emphasizing a shared commitment to delivering quality dining experiences and value for customers.
This situation follows McDonald’s recent announcement of forthcoming changes to the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program, where the points required for redeeming free items will increase. Currently, 5,500 points are needed for items like a Big Mac or Chicken Nuggets, but starting March 17, the redemption threshold will rise to 6,500 points. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
For lower-tier items like a Medium Coffee or Small Fries, the points required will increase from 1,500 to 2,000. Similarly, the points needed for items such as a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 to 3,500, and for a Double Cheeseburger or McChicken sandwich, the requirement will increase to 5,000 points from the previous 4,000 points.
In response to concerns about loyalty scheme changes, a McDonald’s spokesperson attributed the adjustments to increasing food and supply costs. While the points criteria have been adjusted to reflect these rising costs, the company has introduced popular items like Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich for redemption, offering customers more choices.
