Tyrrell Hatton recently shared that he outperformed Rory McIlroy at the Dubai Desert Classic, shocking the latter, following a festive period of indulging in wine and Guinness. The golf star humorously mentioned feeling akin to the Titanic during his initial round in defense of his title amidst damp January weather.
During a pre-tournament press conference, the Masters champion advised his Ryder Cup teammate to pay the fines to remain eligible for European events on the Saudi-backed tour. However, their on-course conversations primarily revolved around the quality of wine consumed over the holidays.
Laughing about his weight gain, Hatton revealed tipping the scales at 204 pounds on January 1st, a significant increase from before the Ryder Cup. He attributed the extra weight to enjoying December with minimal exercise but plenty of drinking, including indulging in a home Guinness tap.
Looking ahead, Hatton acknowledged the need to shed some weight, opting for a “damp January” approach after a festive period of excess. Despite feeling rusty and physically restricted during his first competitive outing of the year, Hatton managed to record a mixed performance on the course.
While Hatton and his peers navigated the challenges of the tournament, discussions about fines related to conflicting golf tour results were notably absent from their interactions. The contentious issue of fines for playing in alternative tours continues to be a point of contention among players like Poland’s Adrian Meronk, who advocate for a fair resolution between different golf tours.
As the golfing community grapples with these ongoing debates, the focus remains on the game itself, with players striving to deliver their best performances despite external distractions.
