CCTV footage has captured the moment a vandal defaced a cricket club with offensive graffiti, and it is believed that the same individual also vandalized a nearby cemetery. The Willesborough Cemetery in Ashford was targeted earlier this month, with several graves being tagged with disturbing messages, causing distress to grieving families.
The security camera at a neighboring cricket club recorded a hooded figure, dressed in black, spray-painting similar obscene shapes on the club’s wall. The vandal caused extensive damage, including tearing down wall-mounted ashtrays at the sports club.
Authorities suspect that the same culprit has been targeting the Willesborough Cricket Club multiple times since July. According to a club spokesperson, the suspect struck every evening between 6.30pm and 8.30pm over a week starting from September 19, causing damage each time, with the graffiti incident occurring on September 23.
The club estimates that the damage will cost around £2,000, including potential costs for repainting window shutters due to the use of graffiti remover. The continuous vandalism is frustrating for the club and its members, diverting funds that could have been used for improving the community cricket facility.
Meanwhile, visitors to the cemetery discovered offensive graffiti on October 10, including derogatory phrases and inappropriate drawings, disturbing the peaceful atmosphere. Protective fencing has been installed around the cemetery to prevent further incidents.
The police are investigating the incidents at the cricket club, while the Ashford Borough Council, responsible for the cemetery, is also looking into the vandalism there. Kent Police are reviewing CCTV footage as part of their ongoing inquiries to determine if there is a connection between the two incidents.
An Ashford Borough Council spokesperson expressed concern over the recent acts of vandalism at Willesborough Cemetery and assured residents that measures are being taken to clean and restore the affected areas. The council appreciates the community’s patience and support during the restoration process.
